Future Job and Clients (Week 4)

In Week 4, I have reflected on my creative skills that I have obtained in the last 3 academic years of studying Animation and Visual Effects (2 years completed) and Digital Media Development (1 year complete). In the future, I’m going towards the direction of becoming an independent animator/content creator that generates content that revolves around animatics (animated shorts) or long duration animation in 2D or 3D.

Over the years, I have only been taught how to animate in 2D in different software such as Adobe Animate and Adobe After Effects. Therefore, I’m curious as what it is like to animate in 3D and I have decided to take it upon myself to do some research first as to which job role I would choose in the animation industry which is an animator.

I have found a quote that may be relevant to reference since I have listed what I want to do in the future such as a motivational quote by Walt Disney that goes: “All of our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”. This means if I pursue my dreams of what I want to be, then it’ll eventually happen.

Animator

Animators take the role of creating still images in order to make the illusion of movement in a sequence. Their understanding of animation are great which is why they are capable of creating characters in a story that shows emotions. Animators are tasked with a brief to complete by making sketches/drawings, models, and images that gives off the illusion of movement.

There are different kinds of animators in the animation industry such as:

  • 2D animators (draws the model of a character, performance of a character, and action),
  • 2D assistant animators (follows instructions for missing drawings, lip syncs characters and cleans up frames as well as making them more precise)
  • 2D rigging/puppet animators (uses rigged models and assets to animate characters from the storyboard)
  • 3D/CG animators (pre-programs their models using a rig or skeleton)
  • Stop-motion animators (uses models/puppets made from real life material to move and photograph/record each frame)

They can either go freelance (being your own boss: planning your own schedule as to when you work and rest, which clients you can work with, when to set deadlines for projects, etc) or work at a company that is in the TV industry, film industry or animation industry.

Clients (Antonelli Ice Cream)

One of my projects that is in the works is an animated advertisement for a client in the Antonelli Ice Cream company. I have been working on this project using a software named Adobe Animate. As of now, there are currently 450 frames in total for the animation at 30 frames per second.

I have currently animated a Vanilla ice cream cone with four other flavours such as Strawberry, Chocolate, Mint Chocolate, and Cookie Dough. Here is a test animation of the animated advert:
